President Donald Trump arrives on Air Force One, Tuesday, Oct. 20, 2026, at Joint Base Andrews, Maryland.

Donald Trump’s approval rating hit new lows in a pair of polls released on Wednesday, as his handling of the cost of living and the war in Iran remain broadly unpopular in the weeks before the midterms.

The surveys, released by The New York Times and CNN, offer some of the last snapshots of voter sentiment less than two weeks before Election Day. And they suggest Republicans have little time left to turn the tide ahead of November.

Just 36% of likely voters approve of the president’s performance, while 59% disapprove in the Times poll, his lowest approval rating in any survey the paper has run with Siena University across his two terms. Trump’s approval rating dipped to 32% in CNN/SSRS’s polling, 7 points lower than the last reading before the 2018 midterm elections, when the Democrats netted 41 seats and regained control of the House.

The president’s unpopularity has also cut into gains he made among key demographics in the 2024 election, including men, younger voters and Hispanic voters. Among white voters without a college degree, a key voting bloc for Trump and the Republican Party, 48% approve of his job performance versus 46% who disapprove in the Times survey.

“President Trump is the unequivocal leader, best messenger, and unmatched motivator for the Republican Party, and he is committed to maintaining Republican majorities in Congress," White House spokesperson Davis Ingle said in a statement. "The choice has never been more clear: doubling down on President Trump’s winning, commonsense agenda or the Democrats’ extreme liberal policies and obstruction.”

Davis Ingle The bottoming out of the president’s popularity coincides with Democrats staking out a notable lead in the generic congressional ballot in both surveys.

Democrats have a 52% to 41% advantage over Republican candidates in the Times poll of likely voters nationwide. They similarly hold a 10-point lead over the GOP among registered voters, 49% to 39%, in CNN’s polling, the party’s largest advantage in that poll since right before the 2020 election.

Still, while the Democrats are favored to retake the House, the fight over control of the Senate remains in a dead heat, as polling shows the two parties neck-and-neck in several key races.

副总统J.D.

Trump is due in South Carolina on Wednesday, where he is expected to rally with Sen. Darline Graham (R-S.C.), whose election to succeed her late brother in the deep-red state has become more competitive than Republicans would like. And Vice President JD Vance is traveling to his home state of Ohio, where Republicans are busy defending a Senate seat and the governor’s mansion in the key battleground.

The New York Times/Siena poll surveyed 3,494 voters by phone from Oct. 12-19, with a margin of error of plus or minus 1.9 percentage points. The CNN poll, conducted by SSRS online and by phone from Oct. 15-18, surveyed 1,206 registered voters with a margin of error of plus or minus 3.3 percentage points.
