Hi Reddit。
Hi Reddit. I'm Mo Tamman, an investigative data and computational editor at Reuters, and I developed the concept for our new series on heat storms.
Scientists talk about the risks of the planet warming more than 2 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels, but that means little to most people. Heat waves are different. Everyone already understands them, so looking at how they have changed — and, boy, have they changed! — can show what’s happening to our climate. The problem was that there was no standard definition of a heat wave.
For example, the US National Weather Service uses two or more days of abnormally hot weather, while the UK, France, Spain and Australia use three. Such dueling definitions made it nearly impossible to tell whether heat waves are becoming more common worldwide. So in consultation with two dozen climate scientists, meteorologists and weather researchers, we developed a universal definition of a heat wave and identified a new concept: the heat storm.
Heat wave: five or more days in a row when a location's daily high is in the hottest 10% of its 1961–1990 range for that day of the year.
Heat storm: a heat wave that, at its peak, covers at least 1% of the planet, roughly half the size of Canada.
Calling something that big a "heat wave" would be like calling a monsoon a rain shower.
We also give each heat storm a name, as is done with hurricanes. I will answer questions from 1-2 pm ET on Thurs, Oct. 22.
