The European Parliament adopted a resolution urging the EU to weigh a naval operation in the Black Sea after a string of attacks on civilian commercial vessels. Lawmakers want Brussels to explore options to protect shipping lanes vital to regional trade.

Lawmakers in Strasbourg voted through a resolution calling on the European Union to examine the feasibility of a naval mission in the Black Sea, citing a rise in strikes against civilian cargo and tanker vessels transiting the region. The text does not commit the bloc to deploying forces but directs the European Commission and member states to assess options.

The push follows months of mounting pressure on commercial shipping in the Black Sea, where vessels carrying grain, fertiliser and energy cargoes have faced repeated drone and missile incidents. NATO members have already moved to bolster protection for shipping in the area, and the Parliament's resolution adds political weight for a dedicated EU-level response rather than one coordinated solely through the alliance.

Any eventual operation would need unanimous backing from EU governments, several of which rely heavily on Black Sea trade routes for agricultural exports and energy imports. Insurers and shipping lines have already raised premiums for vessels operating in the corridor, and further escalation could add fresh strain to European supply chains heading into the winter months.
