The announcement comes amid high tensions between Ukraine and Elon Musk’s Starshield, access to which Kyiv says has been degraded in recent weeks. Musk and U.S. government figures have denied responsibility.

According to identical statements from the two companies, released to coincide with a visit of Finnish Prime Minister Petteri Orpo to Kyiv, the partnership with Ukraine’s Ministry of Defense aims to support the country’s defense capabilities as the war with Russia continues.

“Nations need communications they can rely on in every situation. Satellite networks extend and protect connectivity when networks on the ground are disrupted,” Mikko Hautala, chair of Nokia Defense, said in a statement.
