PBC warned that disruptions to Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co.’s operations could hinder its businesses, joining a list of technology companies that have underlined the chipmaker’s pivotal role in the global artificial intelligence industry.
The statement, in Anthropic’s prospectus for its initial public offering, highlighted how heavily leading AI companies rely on the cutting-edge silicon TSMC produces for the likes of Nvidia Corp. and Advanced Micro Devices Inc. to train their algorithms. Even when firms such as Amazon.com Inc and Alphabet Inc.’s Google design their own AI chips, they still need the world’s preeminent chip manufacturer to turn their blueprints into physical components.
Anthropic pointed out that the bulk of the world’s most advanced chips is still made in Taiwan, primarily at TSMC. This leads to significant risks, including disruptions stemming from geopolitical tensions between Taiwan and China, the AI developer said. China claims the self-governing, democratic island as its own territory, and has not ruled out the use of force as means to take over Taiwan.
“Any military conflict, tariffs and trade restrictions, economic coercion, blockade, natural disaster, or other incident affecting Taiwan could severely disrupt the global supply of advanced chips, with effects that could persist for years,” Anthropic said Monday in its filing. “Any restrictions or delays on the supply of advanced chips out of Taiwan or TSMC would adversely affect our business, financial condition, and results of operations.”Nvidia, the biggest maker of AI chips, depends on TSMC for production of its AI offerings and has previously noted its concern about Taiwan’s fate.
Other companies mentioning the risks of reliance on TSMC include Marvell Technology Inc. and Broadcom Inc. The anxiety is justified: A war over Taiwan could cost the global economy $10 trillion, Bloomberg Economics estimated in 2024.
Anthropic also mentioned the risks of its dependence on three makers of advanced memory chips, SK Hynix Inc., Samsung Electronics Co. and Micron Technology Inc. “Each of these manufacturers is working to expand its production capacity to meet demand. However, there is no guarantee that these efforts will result in adequate supply fast enough to meet demand,” it said.
While TSMC has pledged to invest $265 billion in Arizona to build advanced facilities and is currently looking for an additional site in the US, the majority of its operations and supply chain is still centralized in Taiwan.
In its filing, Anthropic cautioned that efforts to build advanced chip capacity in the US is still in the early stage and may not mitigate existing concentration risks significantly “in the foreseeable future.”
