Bipartisan pair of former South Carolina governors endorse Andrews for Senate A bipartisan pair of former South Carolina governors endorsed Democrat Annie Andrews over Sen. Darline Graham (R) in the state’s Senate election.
Former South Carolina Govs. David Beasley (R) and Jim Hodges (D) appeared in a video for Andrews’s campaign on Monday.
“Now, over the years, the two of us haven’t always agreed on everything,” Hodges said.
“But one thing we do agree on right now is this country is too divided, and the political rhetoric has gotten way, way out of hand,” Beasley stated.
“That is why we’re coming together today to support Annie Andrews,” Hodges continued.
“Annie understands that leadership isn’t about making people angrier. Well, it’s about making things better,” Beasley added. “Well, we may have served as your governor from different political parties, but we agree South Carolina deserves better than more of the same political fight.”Hodges notably defeated Beasley in the 1998 South Carolina gubernatorial race and was the last Democrat to serve as the state’s governor.
Beasley has been critical of the Republican Party and its shift under President Trump. He wrote in an op-ed last week that this was “not the party that I knew, and it is not the party that I consider myself a member of.”Andrews faces off against Graham, who was appointed to fill the seat belonging to her late brother, former Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.). Darline Graham has relied on an endorsement from Trump to garner support, though the president faces growing dissatisfaction from voters over the war in Iran and rising cost of living.
During a candidate debate, Darline Graham was pressed on her ties to the president and his recent Russian oil deal, which supplies the U.S. and the global marketplace with 300,000 tons of diesel “immediately.”
She ultimately deferred to the president on the decision, saying, “It gives the president tools that he can use if he so chooses to end the war through economic sanctions. So that’s up to him as to whether or not he wants to use it or whether he wants to use something else.”She then went on the offensive by attempting to tie Andrews to the Democratic Socialists of America.
“My opponent is going to stand up here tonight and call me a socialist because that’s what her script says,” Andrews said, “and also because she doesn’t want to talk to you about your high gas prices, grocery prices or your closing rural hospital.”Cook Political Report, an election handicapper, shifted the race away from the GOP’s favor last week, citing a new wave of funding boosting Andrews’s chances in the election. Decision Desk HQ, The Hill’s partner, forecasted the race leaning in Graham’s favor, giving her a 67 percent chance of winning, while Andrews has a 33 percent chance.
