Lance Bottoms, the Democratic candidate for Georgia governor, called for a strong turnout in next week’s election, predicting it would help sweep her to victory in a tight race against Republican Rick Jackson.

“We don’t want to have to fight over 11,000 votes,” Bottoms said in an interview at Bloomberg’s offices in Atlanta, referring to the narrow margin by which Joe Biden defeated Donald Trump in Georgia during the 2020 presidential race. “Our margin has to be ‘too big to rig.’”Bottoms, a former Atlanta mayor, is seeking to spur Democratic voters as she tries to overcome Jackson’s narrow polling edge in the campaign to succeed Georgia Governor Brian Kemp, a Republican who’s barred by term limits from seeking reelection. The race is rated as a toss-up by the nonpartisan Cook Political Report.

The Democrat expressed concern about potential election interference, saying that her campaign is investigating allegations that some voters had been told they were ineligible or needed to take a class before voting. She added that there was no indication so far that any such efforts were widespread.

Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger said last week that he expects the state’s voting results by midnight on Election Day as part of a “free, fair and fast” process.

Bottoms’ comments followed Trump’s recently renewed false claims that the 2020 election in Georgia was rigged against him. Speaking at an Oct. 16 rally in the state, the president also claimed without evidence that Democratic Senator Jon Ossoff, who is seeking reelection, was never legitimately elected.

Trump was campaigning for Jackson and Republican Representative Mike Collins, who is challenging Ossoff. Former President Barack Obama is set to rally with Ossoff and Bottoms in Atlanta on Wednesday.

The president’s remarks followed a request by the director of Georgia’s Republican-controlled State Election Board for the Trump administration to intervene in the election to ensure fairness, prompting some concerns that the administration could try to influence the vote.

But Raffensperger, a Republican, told Bloomberg Television this month that he hadn’t heard from federal officials about getting involved and didn’t expect the administration to do so. “We are very confident that at the end of the day you can trust the results,” he said.

After the 2020 election, Trump pressed Raffensperger to “find” the more than 11,700 votes he needed to overturn Biden’s victory in Georgia. Raffensperger rejected the request.
