New Zealand’s central bank governor says there is a “high” chance of an interest rate increase when policymakers next meet in December.
Appearing on Herald NOW Thursday in Auckland, Governor Anna Breman was asked about the chances of the Official Cash Rate rising in December. “I would say that they’re high,” she replied.
The Reserve Bank yesterday surprised markets and economists by leaving the OCR on hold at 2.75%, citing the risks to the global economic outlook and a sluggish domestic economy that is slowing the pass-through of high fuel prices to broader inflation. Breman did say yesterday that further OCR increases were highly likely at coming meetings.
Investors are pricing an 85% chance of a quarter-point hike on Dec. 9, while most economists also see an increase to 3%.
Breman reiterated that policymakers wanted to see how back-to-back rate increases in the third quarter were impacting the local economy, but were focused on returning inflation to the 2% midpoint of the RBNZ’s 1-3% target band.
“Inflation is still high,” Breman told Herald NOW. “We don’t like it at all. It’s our job to ensure that we bring it back down.”
