Indian stocks closed higher Friday, with the benchmark gauge posting its best month since July as local shares emerged as a haven from the global tech selloff.

That contrasts with a roughly 6% drop in the regional gauge as a selloff in technology shares rippled across markets dominated by the artificial intelligence trade.

India’s lack of meaningful plays in technology hardware and semiconductor stocks is providing some insulation from the global selloff. This coincides with tentative signs of a return by overseas investors, who were net buyers of more than $1.2 billion of shares this week through Wednesday.

The biggest concern is oil. At around $117 a barrel, it doesn’t augur well for India. These market moves could prove temporary unless the fundamental geopolitical situation improves.”High oil prices kept the market breadth weak. The Nifty Smallcap 250 index dropped nearly 6% in October, its worst showing in seven months, while the mid-cap gauge shed 3.4%.

India was the world’s top market for initial public offerings in October, thanks to the blockbuster listing of Jio Platforms Ltd. following the country’s biggest-ever IPO. Companies raised about 455 billion rupees ($4.8 billion) through IPOs during the month, ahead of the US where fundraising reached $2.1 billion through Thursday, and Hong Kong at $1.5 billion, according to data compiled by Bloomberg.

Still, the Nifty is down almost 12% year-to-date, compared with a gain of more than 50% in Taiwanese stocks and a 36% rise in South Korea’s Kospi.
