By Bilal Hussain (News) Pakistan inflation eased last month, offering some relief to policymakers after the central bank raised interest rates to contain price pressures.

The consumer price index rose 9.6% in October from a year earlier, data released by the Pakistan Bureau of Statistics showed on Monday. That is slightly above the 9.5% median estimate in a Bloomberg survey, but slower than the 10.26% increase in September.

The moderation provides some respite for the State Bank of Pakistan, though the conflict in the Middle East and elevated energy prices continue to cloud the outlook. Pakistan is particularly vulnerable to rising oil prices because of its reliance on imported energy, which can feed into domestic prices and widen the country’s import bill.

The central bank raised its benchmark interest rate by 50 basis points to 12% last week as the inflation outlook deteriorated. Policymakers warned that elevated food and energy costs could push up inflation expectations and eventually seep into underlying prices. Inflation remains well above the central bank’s 5%-7% target range.

Food costs slowed 7.74% last month from a year earlier, compared to 8.2% in September. Housing & energy prices also moderated 11.03% in October as compared to 12.39% the previous month, bureau data showed.
