TOKYO -- Japanese internet service provider GMO Internet Group on Monday apologized after the company's automated foreign exchange margin trading system was accessed without authorization.
During the incident, GMO's user information was leaked to outside parties, and some users reportedly experienced unauthorized FX trades.
"I offer my heartfelt apologies" to the victims and all those affected, Group Chairman and CEO Masatoshi Kumagai said at a news conference on Monday.
"It is true that our group's experts had pointed out issues with the system," he said, adding that "we failed to apply that feedback to the operation of the service."
Kumagai also apologized for his own words and actions. Regarding his social media posts, he noted, "I posted a photo of myself smiling." Masatoshi Kumagai, chairman and CEO of GMO Internet Group, bows in apology during a press conference in Tokyo on Nov. 2. "I failed to show consideration for the feelings of those who suffered losses," he added.
GMO announced on the same day that it would reduce executive compensation. Kumagai's monthly compensation will be reduced by 30% for three months beginning next month. The compensation of other executives, including vice presidents, will be reduced as well.
Nikkei confirmed on Saturday that a GMO security subsidiary had pointed out a system flaw in April 2024. Although the subsidiary had called for a fundamental overhaul of the system, the company failed to take adequate measures, which led to the incident.
The alleged attacker said on their website on Oct. 24 that they would release customer information unless GMO paid $1 million within three days, a deadline that expired at noon last Tuesday.
Kumagai said that the company would not give in to the demand, reiterating previous comments. "We will not pay criminals," he said. "We will never pay." On Tuesday, the attacker posted what they claimed was the personal information of one GMO customer on the website and said they would release additional data at noon every day. GMO confirmed the following day that the site had been taken down, and said no further leaks have emerged since then.
He said attackers have been among the first to adapt to advances in artificial intelligence, likening the evolution of cyberattacks to the shift "from handguns to machine guns" in warfare.
Kumagai warned the growing disruption caused by data breaches and other cyber incidents was "still only the prologue." He also acknowledged that GMO should have designed its systems around the principle of resilience, setting them up under the assumption that breaches are bound to occur.
"The biggest problem was that we were too slow to respond," he said. Kumagai said that he had long emphasized the need to protect customer information. "Honesty is the foundation of how we deal with our customers," he said. "I have instructed [the company] to confront the issue sincerely and do everything possible to implement [measures] that will help restore trust."
