Central Bank President Christine Lagarde resigned in order to start a new chapter in her career, according to the Bank of France chief.

The Frenchwoman’s early exit in February, announced last week, will let euro-area countries make the correct choices for the institution, Emmanuel Moulin told a panel discussion at a conference in Barcelona on Monday. He is also a member of the ECB’s Governing Council.

Her exit in February will arrive just months before the first round of elections in France to chose a successor to President Emmanuel Macron.

“It should also allow heads of state and government to take the right decisions to have an ECB that functions and is solid and credible and independent,” Moulin said, adding that it will allow them “to choose three new members of the Executive Board of the ECB so that a new team can work with the other three members who remain.”Two other vacancies are looming on the central bank’s Executive Board, with markets chief Isabel Schnabel set to leave in January to join the International Monetary Fund and Chief Economist Philip Lane ending his term in May.
