Beijing has formally removed Hong Kong’s housing chief, Winnie Ho Wing-yin, from her post, after she resigned last week to take political responsibility for the deadly Tai Po fire.
According to the state-run Xinhua News Agency, the State Council removed Ho from office on Tuesday on the recommendation of Chief Executive John Lee Ka-chiu. The announcement gave no reason for the decision and did not name a successor.
In a government statement, Lee said Ho had indicated she would “shoulder the political accountability” for the fire and praised her dedication to implementing his housing policies. “As she officially leaves her post today, I wish her all the best in her future endeavours and a healthy life,” he said.

Ho is the only bureau-head-level official to have resigned over the fire. Lee had said she should assume political accountability, even though no personal wrongdoing had been identified.
Deputy financial secretary Michael Wong Wai-lun has been serving concurrently as acting secretary for housing since Ho’s departure.
Under the Basic Law, the city’s mini-constitution, the appointment and removal of principal officials rest with the central government on the nomination of the chief executive.
She tendered her resignation last Wednesday, a day before the government released the independent committee’s report on the Wang Fuk Court fire. The blaze, the city’s deadliest in decades, killed 168 people and displaced nearly 5,000 residents.
The Independent Checking Unit, which was directly under the Housing Bureau that Ho led, was criticised for its lack of oversight and found to bear greater responsibility for the tragedy.
In a statement issued after her resignation, Ho did not apologise but said she hoped the deceased would rest in peace and that their families would find peace and move forward from their grief.
Ho joined the government in 1992 as an architect and rose through the ranks over more than three decades to become director of architectural services before her appointment as housing secretary in 2022.
During her tenure, she oversaw the initiative to build 30,000 light public housing flats to provide transitional relief for families living in substandard homes.
