Mohammed’s view Abu Dhabi’s annual energy exhibition is buzzing, tangible proof that the UAE has absorbed the blows of the Iran war and has its eye on the future. Most conversations I’ve had at ADIPEC, one of the biggest events on the global calendar, have focused on opportunities: oil above $100 a barrel, a new unconventional oil play being unlocked in the UAE, fusion, AI, and infrastructure upgrades. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman spoke at the opening ceremony, a symbol of the close relationship between energy and technology.

There’s plenty to be excited about in the industry that remains the Gulf’s economic lifeblood. But this ADIPEC isn’t like its predecessors, and it’s not just because of the war.

The UAE’s decision to leave OPEC has changed the gathering’s makeup. This event previously brought together the group’s energy ministers, with major decisions made on the sidelines. This year, Saudi Aramco doesn’t even have a booth, a sign of increasingly fractured Gulf business relations.

While the biggest Saudi, Kuwaiti, Omani, and Qatari companies stayed away, the rest of the world is here, with participants from more than 170 countries. Yet the absence of top executives from ExxonMobil and Chevron, as well as US government representation, has been noticed.

Amos Hochstein, a former senior energy and national security adviser to President Joe Biden, was forceful in his critique: “I think they should be here,” he said of US officials. “The United States and UAE are close allies, you have to be here when it counts.”The war is transforming everything in the region, from trade flows to alliances, but the conflict itself may, in hindsight, seem temporary. The bigger shift will arguably come from AI, determining the future winners and losers.

Hochstein said the UAE is a “critical partner for the US when it comes to AI buildout,” and Sultan Al Jaber, UAE minister of industry and advanced technology and managing director and group chief executive of ADNOC, stressed the point by having Altman as the guest of honor.

ADNOC agreed to become the first energy company to deploy OpenAI Frontier, part of a partnership with OpenAI and G42 to improve operations, strengthen resilience, and increase productivity. “From the moment ChatGPT was born, the world has asked what energy can do for AI,” Al Jaber said. “And now, together, we will find out what AI can do for energy.”Notable Energy executives in Abu Dhabi are saying disruption is now a permanent feature of their business, Bloomberg reported.
