The United Arab Emirates pledged to strengthen its energy infrastructure, saying the Middle East war demonstrated the value of investing in alternative supply routes and spare capacity to ride out times of crisis.

The country must prepare for worst-case scenarios since it “cannot predict what’s going to happen,” Energy Minister Suhail Al Mazrouei said Monday at the Adipec conference in Abu Dhabi. Previous investments in pipelines, ships and logistics have helped the UAE maintain supplies during the conflict, he said.

Producers must also invest in storage internationally as they need to be closer to their customers, Al Mazrouei said. Following the war, many companies are going to “redesign the facilities to be more resilient in the future.”His comments echo those of Adnoc Chief Executive Officer Sultan Al Jaber, who called for expanded strategic storage, larger product stockpiles and strength in infrastructure. Energy security must be measured at the point of delivery, not just production, Al Jaber said earlier on Monday.
