Lucy Powell is facing a challenge from Left-wing lawyers over her crackdown on anti-Semitism in schools.
The Education Secretary pledged to “root out” anti-Semitism from schools and colleges in England last month, after a government-commissioned review exposed widespread abuse suffered by Jewish pupils.
One of her responses to the report was encouraging all schools and colleges to adopt the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance’s (IHRA) definition of anti-Semitism, which states that holding Jewish people collectively responsible for the actions of Israel or comparing Israeli government policy to that of the Nazis is anti-Semitic.
The Good Law Project, a legal campaign group, has written to Ms Powell arguing that the definition “will deter lawful expression by teachers and pupils on the Israel-Palestine conflict, and so create a chilling effect in the school and college environment”.
It has threatened to launch a judicial review against the Education Secretary unless she reconsiders her stance on the IHRA definition.
The Department for Education responded that the definition had “been adopted by 47 countries and countless public bodies and can provide a practical framework for teachers and pupils”.
The Board of Deputies of British Jews said that efforts to discredit the IHRA definition were “particularly egregious” at a time when anti-Semitism is at record levels in Britain. ‘Duty to challenge such views’Ministers have accepted all 27 recommendations of last month’s review by Sir David Bell, the former chief inspector of schools, which revealed that three in five Jewish pupils reported they had been targets of abuse.
As well as recommending schools adopt the IHRA definition, Sir David said schools and colleges should record anti-Semitic incidents as a separate category and there should be new training for teachers to recognise and respond to anti-Semitism.
Presenting the report to Parliament last month, Ms Powell told MPs she would write to all schools and colleges telling them to adopt the IHRA definition, which has already been adopted by mainstream political parties in the UK and Europe and universities across the country.
“As a House and a Government, we must be absolutely clear: blaming British Jews for the actions of the Israeli government is anti-Semitism,” she said.
“Assuming British Jews have a particular political standpoint just because they’re Jewish is anti-Semitism. Targeting British Jews out of concern for Palestine is anti-Semitism.
“When such views and behaviours are expressed in any school or college, whether or not they are aimed directly at a Jewish person, they are anti-Semitic, and we have a duty to challenge them.”
