Voters might want to carpool to the polls this Election Day, as both gas and diesel prices hit record highs, according to GasBuddy’s head of petroleum research Patrick De Haan.

The polling numbers for President Donald Trump and Republican candidates have been brutal as his second term has progressed. A key contributing factor has been Americans’ souring views on the president’s handling of the economy — a topic on which he had previously outpolled Democrats — especially after the start of the war in Iran and its impact on gas prices.

This past year has seen a series of headlines bemoaning record high gas prices and predicting political consequences for the party in power.

In August, De Haan reported that the national average gas price of just over $4 per gallon was the highest it had ever been this late in the calendar year, with the data showing a clear correlation between the spike in prices and the start of the Iran war. Labor Day also witnessed another record high, with AAA data showing the gas prices were nearly a dollar higher than the same holiday weekend last year.

CNN data guru Harry Enten observed in September that the gas prices were “record-breaking for a midterm this century,” and that represented “killer stuff” for Republican efforts to hold on to their congressional majorities. Enten had a similarly gloomy message for the GOP in October.

On Tuesday, De Haan shared the latest gas price data, highlighting that it was a “new election day record.”Today marked “the highest ever national average for gasoline and diesel prices ever on election day,” he wrote, with prices currently at “$4.12/gal for gasoline, $6.28/gal for diesel.”De Haan also pointed out how much the prices had risen since last year, with gas an average of $1.07 per gallon higher and diesel $2.59 per gallon higher.

The rising prices were a historical anomaly, De Haan pointed out, since prices normally “fall in fall,” but this year was the only election year going back to 2006 where prices had gone up in the 30 days prior to Election Day, and one of only three years where that had happened in the 90 days prior to Election Day.

America was also seeing “a new all-time record” for the gap between gasoline and diesel average national prices, wrote De Haan, with the price currently $2.15 per gallon more for diesel.

De Haan also engaged in some Election Day myth-busting, noting that it was not accurate to say gas prices were being pushed down in the swing states.
