A proposed wealth tax on California’s billionaires is “dumb” and wouldn’t generate a dollar for the state, tech billionaire Chris Larsen said at the WSJ Tech conference Tuesday.

“We need to have a bigger presence in Sacramento and push back on the dumb things like the billionaire’s tax,” Larsen, co-founder of the cryptocurrency firm Ripple, said. Larsen added that California’s taxes are already high: “If you want to punish the billionaires, make them stay in California.”The proposed wealth tax, called Prop. 40, has caused an uproar among billionaires, with several strategizing about whether to move out of state. Google co-founder Sergey Brin bought a house on the Nevada side of Lake Tahoe, and Meta Platforms CEO Mark Zuckerberg threatened to move out of California until his board cut him a deal.
