As voting results rolled in on Tuesday night, Democrats began to celebrate early wins that signaled the possibility of a much larger blue wave, with potentially significant implications for the AI economy.
The strong showings for Democrats included a victory for Keisha Lance Bottoms in the Georgia governor’s race, a campaign that had been neck-and-neck for weeks. Bottoms has advocated for a statewide moratorium on data center development. Other key races, including Texas governor and Senate races, pointed to possible Democratic wins, though both were too early to call.
Voters have largely been fixated on unpopular policies out of the Trump administration including tariffs and rising prices related to the war in Iran, though AI has also been front and center. Many early victors on Tuesday advocated for pauses on data center development. Byron Donalds, the Republican candidate who was projected to win the Florida governor’s race, called for additional regulation on data centers, though he did earn the backing of the Anthropic-affiliated donor group Public First by arguing for state-level regulation of AI.
With Democrats seemingly poised to win majorities in both the Senate and the House, as well as many governors’ seats, Republicans and President Trump appear likely to be in the hot seat come January. That means additional scrutiny of data center buildout and oversight hearings for tech companies like Nvidia and SpaceX that forged cozy relationships with the White House. Substantial new federal AI legislation remains a longshot however with Trump maintaining veto power.
