Norwegian Foreign Minister Espen Barth Eide on Wednesday described the outcome of the US midterm elections as a "victory for democracy," welcoming Republicans' acceptance of the results, broadcaster NRK reported.
"The election here has gone well, and the losing party, namely Trump and the Republicans, has recognized the outcome. I think we should be happy about that. That in itself is important in our day and age," Eide said.
He interpreted the results as a sign that American voters had grown tired of the MAGA movement and political polarization.
“I think this is very much a very clear response from the American majority that they have had enough of MAGA and want a different course. They have had enough of polarization,” he added.
Eide acknowledged that the US president retained significant influence over foreign policy but argued that the election outcome would limit Trump's ability to reshape the country in his own image.
Norwegian economic analyst Ketil Solvik-Olsen of the Civita think tank said the results suggested that American society was less politically divided than often portrayed.
"Americans are not as polarized as people would like them to be. It is polarized at the top, but not necessarily at the grassroots," Solvik-Olsen said.
He argued that extreme voices often dominated US political debate, while many Americans held more moderate views.
US President Donald Trump said he would accept the election results and was prepared to cooperate with Democrats.
"I look forward to working with them, we'll figure it out," Trump was quoted as saying. Trump also acknowledged that the Iran issue had partly contributed to Republican losses.
Democrats won control of both chambers of the US Congress in the Nov. 3 midterm elections, ending Republican control of the House of Representatives and Senate. The new congressional majorities are scheduled to take office in January 2027.
