3:57pm GMT Iran has threatened to use “new weapons” against the US if Donald Trump decides to “betray” voters and launch strikes.

Tehran issued the warning after a humiliating defeat for the US president in the midterm elections, claiming the result as a vindication of Iranian resistance.

Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, the speaker of Iran’s parliament and the country’s chief peace negotiator, said: “Conscience or the cost of living, Americans said NO TO WAR, and we endorse this message.

“If the US government betrays their public will to serve international paymasters and blackmailers, it will learn our NO comes with a nightmare.”

Iran issued the warning after Donald Trump suffered a humiliating defeat in the midterm elections The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) went further, declaring that the midterm “disaster” for the Republican Party was the direct result of “America’s heavy defeat in the war it started against Iran”.

“If America or the Zionists take any action, Iran will respond differently than before, using a new doctrine and new conventional weapons technology,” said Hamidreza Moghaddamfar, an adviser to the IRGC’s commander in chief.

Should Arab states such as the United Arab Emirates and Bahrain allow their territory to be used for attacks, he added, “Iran’s strikes will go further” than the US bases. He said the assassination of Iranian officials or commanders would draw “surprising responses”.

Iran, Mr Moghaddamfar said, had “set aside the principles of symmetry and proportionality a long time ago”, and would retaliate “beyond any geographical limits”.

A member of the IRGC at a military training centre for civilians at Tajrish Square in Tehran Esmail Baghaei, Iran’s foreign ministry spokesman, addressed the US president directly, saying: “Pride comes before a fall.”The American people, he said, had “now sent you a clear message”, warning that if Mr Trump “persists in this dangerous course, the consequences of this grave miscalculation will extend far beyond what you have already witnessed”.

He added: “Attacking Iran does not bring victory. It only results in defeat. Iran is not a nation that can be understood through arrogance, intimidated through threats, or brought to its knees through aggression.”Ayatollah Mojtaba Khamenei, Iran’s supreme leader, said in a written statement that US hostility would persist regardless of which party was in power, warning against “even the slightest inclination towards submission” to the US.

“The US sees the end of its hegemony as distant; we see it as near,” he added.

On Wednesday, Iranians poured into the streets across the country to mark Nov 4, known in Iran as the National Day of Fighting Global Arrogance, or Students’ Day.

It coincides with the anniversary of the 1979 Iran hostage crisis, when more than 50 American diplomats and citizens were held captive by militants in Tehran’s US embassy.

Crowds chanted “Death to America”, as they do every year, but this time against the backdrop of an on-and-off war and an election that Tehran had cast as a victory.

Rallies were held around Iran on Wednesday to mark Students’ Day Mr Trump lost control of both the House of Representatives and the Senate, and while he has shown no sign of changing course on Iran, he acknowledged the unpopular Middle East war had hurt his party.

“I think a part of it was Iran,” he told Fox News, pointing to soaring fuel prices driven by disruptions and shipping attacks in the Strait of Hormuz.

Andy Burnham, the Prime Minister, also called on Mr Trump to end the war, said that US voters wanted to “see the world coming together and focusing on the things that matter to people”, and pledged to push for de-escalation.

“The world has an opportunity now” to focus on resolving the Iran war and easing the cost of living crisis, he said, adding: “That’s what the voters, in my view, are saying in the US.”The Prime Minister called on Mr Trump to end the war in Iran, and pledged to push for de-escalation For Tehran, the midterm elections offered something its missiles could not: an American electorate appearing to punish the president who bombed it.

After months of insisting it had bloodied a superpower, Iran can now point to a concrete political cost inflicted on Mr Trump at home and claim, however selectively, that US voters have ratified its narrative of the war.

In his comments, Khamenei traced American hostility to the CIA-backed 1953 coup, and warned that a change of party in Washington would not soften it.

“If there are still those who place some hope in a change of behaviour or partisan and factional shifts in the system of domination, or who imagine they can dissuade America from enmity by offering it concessions, they are gravely mistaken,” he said.

He described Iran’s “management” of the Strait of Hormuz and the targeting of US bases in the region as “an initial jihad against arrogance” that would “take on far wider dimensions” if attacks resumed, and urged Iranians to pursue a doctrine of “Iran as strong as possible”.
