Republican Jon Bonck is projected to win the open Texas House race to replace outgoing Rep. Wesley Hunt (R), according to Decision Desk HQ.

The GOP candidate defeated Democratic opponent Melissa McDonough in the race to represent the state’s 38th District. He notched just over 51 percent of the vote over McDonough’s 47 percent, as of Wednesday afternoon.

Bonck, who handily won the GOP primary in May, ran on strengthening border security, protecting Second Amendment rights, cutting spending for foreign wars and supporting President Trump’s agenda.

Trump backed Bonck’s campaign in a Truth Social post ahead of the Republican primary, granting the mortgage banker and real estate small business owner his “Complete and Total Endorsement” in this race.

The 38th District is located in the southeastern region of the state and includes parts of the Houston suburbs. Hunt has represented the district since 2023, before he left to launch an unsuccessful Senate bid.
