Key Senate progressive Chris Van Hollen said Wednesday that Democrats should demand a “bold agenda” targeting entrenched corporate interests in Washington before agreeing to back Chuck Schumer or any other aspiring Senate majority leader.

The Maryland Democrat’s comments, coming just hours after Democrats won decisive victories across the country and secured sizable majorities in both the House and Senate, signal that those on the party’s left flank want more aggressive leaders committed to an economic populist platform.

“No one should be committing to anybody as the next Democratic leader without having that conversation,” Van Hollen said in an interview Wednesday. “We need commitments.”Schumer, the Senate’s long-time Democratic leader, expressed confidence Wednesday that he would retain the party’s top post. So far, no one has emerged to challenge him for the job.

“The issue is not me. I’ll be reelected as majority leader, but the issue is focusing on the American people and what they want,” Schumer told reporters Wednesday in Washington when asked about how he would deal with candidates who said they wouldn’t back him for the top job.

Democrats flipped at least seven US Senate sets and could win two more in Alaska and Mississippi, a historic rout and a rebuke to President Donald Trump’s second term.

Van Hollen, a former Senate and House party campaign chair, credited the victories, including several in Republican strongholds, to voters rising up “to protect their democracy and their pocketbooks” rather than to a grand strategy devised by Washington Democrats.

Van Hollen, who said he is actively “kicking the tires” on a 2028 presidential bid, traveled extensively to campaign for Democrats, some of whom have called for new leadership in Washington and said they won’t vote for Schumer. The party, Van Hollen said, needs to reflect the more populist vision of the incoming class of Democrats, and the voters who supported them.

“Working people have been screwed for way too long and we need to unrig an economy that’s been built to serve billionaires and big corporations,” he said. “It’s not a time for incrementalism. It’s a time to move forward a very bold kitchen table agenda.”Among the issues that have split Democrats on Schumer’s watch was the party establishment endorsing losers in party primaries like Haley Stevens in Michigan over Abdul El-Sayed, who Van Hollen and other progressives endorsed.
