Artificial intelligence skills are no longer optional for the hundreds of thousands of young Britons seeking their first job, according to data from recruitment platforms that show how the technology is deciding who gets a foothold in the toughest labor market in decades.
Entry-level postings mentioning AI have almost tripled since the start of last year, figures provided by job-search website Adzuna show. The surge largely reflects employers adding AI skill requirements to established roles such as sales representatives, software engineers or assistants.
Separate data from Indeed show one in six vacancies for entry-level roles in banking, legal, software development and other highly exposed occupations now mentions AI, double a year ago. Research for the British Chambers of Commerce meanwhile warned of the “very real threat” of a two-tier labor market emerging.
The increasing emphasis on AI competence comes amid fierce competition for jobs, with vacancies for junior positions on Adzuna down by a quarter since January 2025. Firms still hiring want AI-whisperers who can shepherd bots and step in when the technology can’t do something on its own.
“If you’re entering the jobs market and you’re looking for an office-based job and you don’t have AI skills, the current climate is even worse than during the Great Financial Crisis,” Andrew Hunter, co-founder of Adzuna, said in an interview. “It’s a new set of skills that you need in 2026, and I think that’s one of the big reasons why we have high youth unemployment in this country.”The rapid advance of automation is putting pressure on Prime Minister Andy Burnham to step up AI and digital training to help young people become and remain employable. Almost one million 16 to 24 year-olds are neither working nor in education or training, with the number forecast to keep rising.

AI is proving a mixed blessing for Britain and other developed economies. Widespread adoption across the UK economy could turbocharge productivity and lift GDP by more than the 10% by 2031, according to analysis for the British Chambers of Commerce published Wednesday. But it also warned of a “deeply polarized two-tier labor market,” with traditional administrative, secretarial and customer-facing roles projected to fall sharply as firms automate more tasks.
“Without action, we could see an economic fracture open up: a highly paid elite who design, implement and own AI systems on one side, and a precarious layer of displaced workers on the other,” Chi Onwurah, a Labour lawmaker and chair of the Science, Innovation and Technology Committee, said in a contribution to the work.
A report by former Labour minister, Alan Milburn, in May warned of a “lost generation” of young people. In August the government launched an “AI bootcamp” where a group of 16 to 21-year-olds in northwest England learned how to build AI tools and how businesses use AI among other things. For those with the right skills, there are opportunities.

Simon Crichton, global chief executive officer at Harvey Nash, a recruitment agency, said some firms in tech, manufacturing and finance are stepping up junior hiring. “AI projects have all started kicking off in the last 12 months” and firms “are finding that there are gaps that they need to fill,” he said.
Crichton added that firms are creating new roles that hand juniors “the last 20% of the task” done by AI. Having automated repetitive work, employers are now seeking young workers with data and project management skills who can interpret and review AI output.
THG Ingenuity
Jo Drake, a chief technology officer at THG Ingenuity, said her company is redesigning entry-level roles around directing and checking AI’s work.
“When you look at the amount of review we’re having to do, the man-marking of the agents, actually that’s quite good for education,” Drake, who manages about 250 people, said. “We really use it as a way to bring junior members up to speed really fast.”At Indeed, senior economist Jack Kennedy cautioned that demand for AI skills is mostly coming from a small number of large employers, partly in data center and AI training roles, and has only offset a third of the declines in other entry-level postings.

The two-track jobs market for young people risks leaving behind those who missed out on learning their way around AI at university or in their first jobs. However, the gap is still relatively narrow. At the moment, most jobs only require basic skills, like prompting ChatGPT and using AI alongside more traditional software like Microsoft Excel.
“There is an opportunity for young people to empower themselves, but it’s quite overwhelming to know where to start,” Hunter said. “The skills we think are really, really valuable this month may be entirely redundant by the spring of next year.”
