My heart breaks for our country. Despite the best efforts by so many to support Republican candidates and call conservatives back to our principles, our Republican team suffered a historic defeat. How bad it ultimately will be remains to be seen. While we wait for every legal vote to be counted, it’s important to understand how and why this happened.
This midterm election wasn’t a rout, it was a reckoning. The American people have rejected our party’s shift toward economic populism, and our majorities in Congress and state legislatures and governorships across the country paid the price.
I will always believe that the U.S. is a conservative country. Americans believe in conservative ideals and hold fast to conservative principles, not only in politics but in the way we live our lives. When conservatives fail to sound a clarion call for our principles, voters become discouraged and confused.
Over the past two years, we’ve seen conservatives shrug as a Republican Congress continued to rack up record debt and spending while the administration seized stakes in private companies, imposed unconstitutional tariffs on friend and foe alike and abandoned the right to life, all while copying the other side by offering government handouts and expanding entitlements. The unfinished war against Iran became an albatross around the necks of Republicans because Washington stopped short and pursued appeasement rather than allowing our troops to finish off the threat posed by the Iranian regime, once and for all.
As we saw Tuesday night, many Americans will still vote conservative, but some will stay home. Worse yet, some will become so repulsed by populism and corruption that they will vote for the other side.
This election reminds me of 2006, when the people booted out big-government Republicanism in favor of Nancy Pelosi and her party. I entered the Republican leadership in Congress soon after to restore small-government conservatism. We witnessed the rise of the tea-party movement and won back the House in 2010.
With conservative principles restored to the center of our movement and our party, the American people will again trust us with their votes.
The Democrats aren’t the party of John F. Kennedy anymore. They will be more radical than ever. I fear that they have become the party not only of socialism but of antisemitism. I believe that their extremism will be their downfall. But we must be ready to seize the advantage by offering a clear conservative alternative.
We must learn from our mistakes and return, invigorated to save our country. With the next presidential election on the horizon, we must decide what we’re for before we decide whom we’re for.
For now, we walk through the debris, pick up the pieces, and start to rebuild. As we enter this postelection season, I will double down our efforts to revive the conservative movement through our voice and the work of Advancing American Freedom Foundation. I invite you to join us.
Like most people of faith, I’m an eternal optimist. I know that with God’s help, we can save our movement—and our country—again. We can return the Republican Party to the timeless principles that have led to our greatest successes and, more important, have made America strong, prosperous and free. The conservative comeback starts today. Let’s get to work. Mr. Pence served as vice president, 2017-21. [video] WSJ Opinion: Hits and Misses of the Week
