By Daniel Cancel and Anna J Kaiser Florida election authorities continue to count votes in four races for the US House of Representatives, including several with majority Hispanic communities where Republicans won by as much as 40 points just two years ago.
While the Florida GOP broadly held its grip on the state, the four races are too close to call amid decisive swings to the left among Latino voters. That could deliver additional seats for Democrats.
Republican incumbents Maria Elvira Salazar and Mario Diaz-Balart hold small leads that are below or close to the 0.5% threshold to avoid an eventual recount in their Miami-area districts, data compiled by the Associated Press show.
In Central Florida, Darren Soto, the Democratic incumbent from the 9th district, is ahead in his race but has yet to be declared the winner. His district was part of the gerrymandering efforts by Governor Ron DeSantis to try to help Republicans gain seats, an effort that so far has flopped.
Ryan Elijah, who beat Cory Mills in the Republican primary in the 7th district, holds a slim lead over challenger Bale Dalton in another race that’s yet to be called.
If the current margins hold, the composition would be unchanged from 2024 when Florida had 20 Republicans and eight Democrats in the House.

The closest races may not be resolved for more than a week. Florida law requires a machine recount if the margin is half a percentage point or less after counties submit their first unofficial returns — their initial canvassed totals — on Saturday, Nov. 7.
If the machine recount leaves a margin of one-quarter of a percentage point or less, a manual recount is required. The machine-recount results, known as the second unofficial returns, would be due Nov. 12.
The Department of State said the results will not become official until the state Elections Canvassing Commission certifies them on Nov. 17.
The close races for Salazar and Diaz-Balart show just how much sentiment has changed in two years within the Latino community in South Florida. While Venezuelans and Cubans have celebrated some of President Donald Trump’s policies to remove Nicolas Maduro from power and increase pressure against the Castro regime, changes to Temporary Protection Status, deportations and surging healthcare costs have weighed on the communities.
Salazar, a former Spanish-language TV journalist, won her seat in the 27th district in 2024 by more than 20 percentage points. The district includes Little Havana and other majority Latino communities.

In an attempt to distance herself from the White House, Salazar called the president out in an ad saying his policies had “gone too far” and that he was alienating his own supporters.
She was challenged by Eliott Rodriguez, who was also a journalist in Miami for decades. Rodriguez called on the county election supervisor to recuse herself from the process in a statement on Thursday, alleging that her son-in-law is working as Salazar’s attorney.
The supervisor, Alina Garcia, told CBS News that she will not recuse herself and denied any conflicts.
In the 26th district, which Diaz-Balart has held since 2003, Democratic challenger Nicole Locklin, has alleged inconsistencies in the vote counting. The district includes Doral, a city with a large Venezuelan community where Trump owns a golf course and hotel that will host the G20 next month. The district also includes Hialeah, a Cuban stronghold, which has long been a safe area for Republicans.

Diaz-Balart won his race in 2024 by more than 40 percentage points.
While Florida resisted the blue tsunami that swept the US on Nov. 3, Democrats ran competitive races throughout the state despite Republicans having about 1.5 million more registered voters. DeSantis said he warned fellow Republicans that the “line of scrimmage” had moved significantly since the last elections.
“I welcome the recount and support allowing the process to run its course in a transparent manner in accordance with Florida law,” Salazar said in a statement.
