President Donald Trump’s deportation czar, Tom Homan, has been called a lot of things since being put in charge of the president’s deadly racist anti-immigrant crackdown. “Brilliant political tactician” is not one of them.
Poll after has shown Hispanic voters fleeing the MAGA movement ahead of the midterm elections amid widespread opposition to mass deportations This trend has Republicans across the country fretting over the party’s midterm prospects. That’s particularly true in Florida, where multiple Trump-supporting lawmakers have criticized Trump’s anti-immigrant crusade warning that Hispanic voters’ anger at the administration is placing several Republican-held seats at risk of flipping in Democrats’ favor.
Among the several surprising flips over the past year have been Miami’s election of its first Democratic mayor in nearly three decades a Democratic victory over a Trump-backed opponent in the state house district that includes Trump’s Mar-a-Lago resort.
So politically speaking, Florida doesn’t seem like the best place for the White House to sell its mass deportation strategy right now. Nonetheless, at a right-wing conference on Thursday, Homan made an ominous vow to Hispanic conservatives.
Homan spoke at the second annual Hispanic Leadership Summit hosted by the far-right America First Policy Institute, a think tank founded by Trump’s deputy chief of staff for policy, Stephen Miller The event was held near the largely immigrant community of Doral, Florida, which has been hard hit by Immigration and Customs Enforcement, devastating local residents businesses“Mass deportation is happening,”Homan said, as reported by WPLG Local 10 in Florida He said September’s deportation numbers were “pretty good,” adding, “I think September is going to be the highest deportations of any month in the history of ICE.”Then he made an ominous statement about what to expect in the year ahead. “Wait until you see what we do next year,” he said.
Just last week, Homan publicly that he doesn’t “give a s—” whether people call him “racist” or a “Nazi” for his role in leading Trump’s crackdown. Critics of the policy —including some conservatives legal experts historians at least one Reagan-appointed federal judge— have compared ICE officials to Nazis and the KKK.
Homan, who has denied allegations of bribery related to government contracts, may not care about how Trump’s mass deportation agenda is being received. But plenty of voters do. And not just the MAGA sycophants who are champing at the bit for Trump to expel masses of Black and Hispanic people from the country. But also Hispanic voters, including conservative-leaning ones, who have expressed wariness about the Department of Homeland Security’s tactics and probably won’t love the idea of Homan hinting at harsher immigration enforcement to come.
Homan, however, appeared indifferent to the trend in public opinion. During an interview with CBS News on Thursday he denounced Republican critics of ICE and said the backlash is about “hate on this administration and taking on Trump.”The post Homan’s ominous vow on deportations won’t win over wary Hispanic voters MS NOW
