Protest against austerity measures and budget cuts, in Brussels, October 9, 2026. The anger expressed in Brussels on Friday, October 9, was difficult to sum up in a single sentence, with demonstrators of all ages and backgrounds taking to the streets. Railway workers, teachers, university and secondary school students, refugee advocacy groups, artists, civil servants – 30,000 people according to police estimates, and 50,000 according to unions – marched through the Belgian capital to protest the socio-economic policies of Bart De Wever's government. With the government set to unveil its budget on October 13, demonstrators intended to make their voices heard.

Overlooking Place de l'Albertine, just steps from the central train station, Léon Poncin watched the "coming together of struggles" with amazement. "It's not so much the number of participants that surprises me, but the diversity of groups involved," said the 70-something retired civil servant, who proudly wore a vest from the "angry old folks gang," a collective founded eight years ago in response to the pension reform pushed by the then-pensions minister, the right-wing Daniel Bacquelaine. "Today we're faced with a government that's turning more and more to the far right, and I don't know who can accept that," he summed up.
