October 9, 2026 MT GEM NO. 2 is a crude oil tankered in Panama. It had 22 Indian nationals on board as crew when a drone struck it at Sharjah Anchorage on 9 October, Sonowal said. Sharjah Anchorage is in the Arabian Gulf, in the Dubai area of the UAE, according to MarineTraffic. Sonowal said officials are working with the company that manages the vessel to make sure the crew stay safe. He did not give details on any damage to the ship.

On Friday, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) set out the aims of a new group called the Group of Friends on Safety and Security of Shipping and Seafarers. MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said the group wants the safety of commercial shipping and seafarers to be at the centre of international talks, and wants to prevent attacks that disrupt maritime trade. The group brings together countries with a stake in commercial shipping and the maritime industry, and those with large seafaring communities.

Two countries condemned attacks on commercial vessels and seafarers in the Gulf region and nearby waters, and in the Black Sea, and called for them to stop at once. They warned that such attacks disrupt trade and put lives at risk.
