Yemen’s government-aligned forces said they destroyed five armored military vehicles belonging to the Houthi group while repelling an attempted advance toward Dhubab Airport in Yemen's western Taiz province.

In a late Saturday statement released on US social media platform Facebook, the Giants Brigades said their forces "destroyed five Houthi armored vehicles, killing those aboard." The operation took place as the Houthis made a "desperate attempt” to advance toward Dhubab Airport on the western coast, the statement noted.

The brigades also released a video clip purportedly documenting the moment the vehicles were targeted, showing flames rising from them. The Houthis did not immediately comment on the statement.

Earlier Saturday, the Giants Brigades also announced they had thwarted a Houthi attack on their positions north of Dhubab Airport, near the Bab el-Mandeb Strait.

They said the Houthis had suffered “heavy losses” in personnel and equipment, without further details.

On Monday, the Giants Brigades said they had taken control of Dhubab Airport and other positions around the Bab el-Mandeb Strait in western Yemen following clashes with the Houthis.

The developments come amid a military escalation that began in July and is described as the most extensive since a period of relative calm following a truce that took effect in April 2022.

Yemen has been engulfed in conflict since the Houthis seized Sanaa in September 2014, prompting a Saudi-led coalition to intervene in March 2015 in support of the internationally recognized government.
