The tone was polite. The words, carefully chosen. But Volodymyr Zelensky's eyes betrayed the resolve of a wartime leader. Regardless of US pressure, "we will defend ourselves [against Russian aggression], because otherwise, we will lose our life, our homes, our freedom, independence, Ukraine," the Ukrainian president said during an interview with US network ABC on Sunday, October 11.

Moments later, Berlin, through its foreign minister, stated it "fully supports" Zelensky "in carrying out his heavy responsibilities," and called for increased "pressure" on Russian President Vladimir Putin "so that he is ready to negotiate." "All my full support for President Zelenskyy as he leads the fight for his people’s freedom," echoed European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen on X. "The past 24 hours had been difficult for Ukraine," added UK Prime Minister Andy Burnam, assuring Zelensky of his "complete solidarity."

On Friday, unfazed by the prospect of scandalizing his allies and viewing Russia as little more than a gas station, US President Donald Trump boasted ofg a deal with the Kremlin to allow the United States to obtain roughly 4 million metric tons of Russian diesel in short order. It was a straightforward, rapid "deal" of the kind Trump favors, which he hopes will help lower gas prices before November 3 and the looming midterm elections, which are expected to be tough for the Republican camp.
