Premier Giorgia Meloni said her government was nearing an accord with the European Union over a mechanism to cut the price of gas used to generate electricity, a move that would allow her to ease energy bills ahead of a national election next year.

“The technical negotiation has been intense and constructive and is bringing us closer to a solution that is compatible with European rules,” Meloni told lawmakers Wednesday ahead of a European leaders’ meeting. “This would enable us to enact our measure, reducing the weight of the price of gas-generated electricity on the overall cost of electricity.”Meloni has been under pressure to shield voters from runaway energy prices caused by the war in Iran and disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz. Bloomberg News reported last week that Italy and the EU were nearing agreement on a deal that would allow Italy to cap the price of gas used to generate electricity.

Meloni also reiterated she is seeking to use higher VAT revenue from the surge in fuel prices to help shield families damaged by the crisis.
