Saudi airlines are racing to evacuate as much as $4 billion worth of aircraft stationed at Riyadh Airport in the face of deadly strikes by Houthi militia.
Private jets, commercial airliners and helicopters were parked at the kingdom’s capital airport when Saudi authorities shut its runway Saturday after a missile tore a hole through one of its terminals, killing at least 12 and injuring over 300 others. The strike, among the most devastating direct missile attacks on a civilian airport, followed a Thursday Houthi strike that killed three others and damaged five aircraft.
With Riyadh Airport closed until midnight this coming Sunday, airlines, insurers and plane owners want to limit the exposure of aircraft assets on the ground amid renewed strikes by the Iranian-back Yemeni militia and keep at least part of their disrupted flight network intact. The group has repeatedly declared that Saudi airspace is a “theater for the operations of our armed forces.”Since Thursday, the number of aircraft on the ground at Riyadh Airport has dwindled from 134 to 38 as of noon Wednesday, according to tracking data from Flightradar24.
Of those, one has been written off, with five others suffering some level of damage, according to an internal insurance report reviewed by The Wall Street Journal. Combined, the six damaged aircraft have a total insured value of some $375 million, according to the report.
Direct hits on an airport have long been an aviation insurance doomsday scenario, given that billions of dollars worth of planes sit tightly next to each other and could be wiped out en masse. Earlier this year, planes in Dubai and in Tel Aviv were damaged on the tarmac, triggering consternation among insurers.
“A single strike on a busy hub could cause exactly the kind of concentrated loss war insurers fear most,” said Marcos Alvarez, a managing director at Morningstar DBRS’s Global Financial Institutions ratings group.
The Houthi strikes over the last week have thrown Saudi Arabia’s aviation industry into crisis and comes as the kingdom has been investing tens of billions into constructing new airports, upgrading older terminals and splashing out on new fleets of commercial aircraft.
The worst affected airline has so far been Saudia, the kingdom’s flag carrier and biggest airline, whose aircraft was destroyed in the strike on Thursday last week. The aircraft, a nearly 16-year-old Airbus A320, was struck while parked at Terminal 4. Two others parked on either side, including an Airbus A321neo delivered in April, suffered damage in the blast, according to people familiar with the attacks.
“The Saudia aircraft destroyed in Riyadh shows that the real exposure is on the ground,” Alvarez said.
Saudia previously confirmed no passengers were on board the aircraft at the time. Three people died in the strike, including a captain at the airline.

Debris from the separate Saturday attack, meanwhile, damaged the nose of a Boeing 787, according to the insurance report. That wide-body plane, operated by another state-backed airline, Riyadh Air, is insured for more than $130 million.
Riyadh Air formally started commercial operations in June and is a key pillar of Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman’s plans to turn the kingdom into a major, futuristic tourism destination. The airline had five aircraft parked on the tarmac when the Houthi strike broke through Saudi air defenses. Four have since been flown to surrounding airports, including Jeddah and Medina to the west of the kingdom.
The aircraft damage is set to weigh on war risk insurance policies that airlines are required to have to fly their planes. Saudi’s three biggest state-backed airlines—Saudia, Riyadh Air and discount operator Flyadeal—are set to renew their policies next month, according to a person familiar with the matter. It isn’t clear how much policies might rise.
Airlines could be set to pay higher premiums to insure their planes following the attempted hijacking of a FlyDubai jet late last month. The Boeing 737 MAX is undergoing inspections to see if the extreme speeds and forces it was subjected to during the attack were severe enough to prevent the aircraft flying again. If it doesn’t re-enter service, the aircraft will be treated as written off by insurers and factored into their aviation risk profile.
