Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Wednesday hailed Israel's gains in Latin America as Colombia became the latest of a small number of countries to open an embassy in Jerusalem. Israel considers Jerusalem its undivided capital. But with the notable exception of the United States, the vast majority of countries that recognize Israel maintain their embassies in Tel Aviv, believing the contested holy city's status must be determined in a final resolution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
Netanyahu, attending a ceremony to inaugurate the Colombian embassy, said that Latin America was proving to be a growing asset for Israel, which has faced an intense international backlash over the war in Gaza, including from traditional Western allies.
"The global woke coalition just went down," Netanyahu said, referring to the defeats of left-wing Latin American leaders who were critical of Israel. "Something remarkable is happening in Latin America – it's all coming back," he said. "We're willing to fight the barbarians. And we appreciate those who stand with us – and Colombia stands with us," he said, adding, "You have no better friend than Israel." Netanyahu is facing a tough fight for a new mandate in October 27 elections, with the opposition pointing to Israel's diplomatic isolation over the war in Gaza launched after the October 7, 2023 Hamas attack.
Netanyahu voiced optimism for a new pro-Israel win in Latin America when its most populous country, Brazil, votes in an October 25 runoff election, with hard-right senator Flavio Bolsonaro ahead in the first round.
Colombia in August inaugurated a hard-right president, Abelardo de la Espriella, who quickly fulfilled promises to move the embassy to Jerusalem. It marked a sharp contrast to his leftist predecessor, Gustavo Petro, who in 2024 severed ties with Israel – previously a key security partner – over Gaza. De la Espriella, in a videotaped message, said that Israel and Colombia had "enormous possibilities to work together," including in intelligence-sharing and fighting organized crime.
The opening of the embassy "isn't simply about a diplomatic headquarters," he said. "We are opening a new gateway for Colombia and Israel to become closer, for our entrepreneurs to discover opportunities, for our scientists and universities to develop joint projects, and for cooperation between both countries to translate into concrete results for our two peoples," he said.
Arab criticism Palestinians also want Jerusalem as their capital. But Israel has controlled the entirety of the city, home to holy sites of Judaism, Christianity and Islam, since seizing the eastern part from Jordan in the 1967 Arab-Israeli War and later annexing it. The Palestinian Authority condemned Colombia's move, saying it "undermines the international consensus on the legal status of the holy city, and infringes upon the inalienable rights of the Palestinian people."
Saudi Arabia, with which Netanyahu has hoped to normalize relations, called it a "flagrant violation of international law." President Donald Trump shattered international near-unanimity on the hot-button issue in 2018 during his first term by moving the US embassy to Jerusalem, which is home to Israel's parliament, prime minister and most other major governmental institutions.
Colombia is the most significant country to follow suit. Since Trump's move, only a handful of small US-aligned countries have opened embassies in Jerusalem – Fiji, Guatemala, Honduras, Papua New Guinea, Paraguay and Nauru. Kosovo and Somaliland, which are not member-states of the United Nations, have also opened what they consider their embassies in Jerusalem.
Argentine President Javier Milei, another right-wing Latin American who is an outspoken supporter of Israel, earlier promised to move his country's embassy to Jerusalem. But the move has been delayed due to a dispute over Israeli economic activity in the Falklands, the British-administered Atlantic islands claimed by Argentina, which calls them the Malvinas.
Under De la Espriella, Colombia also recognized Israel's claim over the Golan Heights, which it seized from Syria in 1967. The United States was until then the only country to recognize Israel's annexation of the territory in 1981. The United Nations maintains that the plateau is Syrian territory under Israeli military occupation.
