The protest began as a tent encampment in the modernist Praça D. João I square before moving to the steps of the city hall late on Thursday. Some demonstrators carried banners reading “Can’t pay your rent? Bring a tent.”Prime Minister Luís Montenegro rejected suggestions that the violence pointed to a broader upheaval, saying Portugal wasn’t experiencing the kind of turbulence unfolding elsewhere in Europe.
