Central Bank Governing Council member Olli Rehn said policymakers will have additional information at the final rate decision of the year, while suggesting the current policy approach is working.

In December “we will have our broad macroeconomic projection exercise on our table to look at and analyze in depth the European economy,” Rehn said in a Bloomberg Television interview on Friday. “Then we have more information concerning both the growth outlook and inflation outlook that are important for our decision.”Speaking on the sidelines of the IMF’s annual meeting in Bangkok on Friday, Finland’s central bank chief said a “measured” approach is the right stance.

“Energy prices are weighing on inflation and raising inflation,” he said. “The picture is somewhat mixed because we do not see second-order effects for the moment, and we have not seen a significant broadening of inflation. Of course, we show vigilance, and we check that inflation will not just creep in and become intense.”Policymakers have already raised borrowing costs twice in this cycle — in June and September. Investors and economists are expecting them to hold at their meeting later this month, with the Dec. 17 rate decision now in focus.

Rehn’s Latvian counterpart, Martins Kazaks, said Thursday that the ECB is in “no rush” as opposing forces shape euro-zone inflation. While a key focus is on high energy costs triggered by war in Ukraine, officials are also watching closely for the impact of higher bond yields, which could weigh on economic activity.

“We are seeing tighter financial conditions, which are weighing on the growth outlook of Europe, and also having a disinflationary impact on the inflation outlook,” Rehn said.

Still, he warned not to “jump the gun” when it comes to the possibility that tighter financial conditions could limit the need for ECB policy action.

He described them as “one important factor,” but “I could name several other metrics,” highlighting the labor market and wage growth.

“We take decisions meeting by meeting, based on fresh data and and sound analysis, and always with a comprehensive assessment and overall judgment,” he said. “That’s very important, especially in these times of exceptional uncertainty.”
