President Karol Nawrocki asked the prime minister to sign off on delayed appointments to the central bank’s management board in an attempt to break a political standoff that threatens to cripple the institution.

The approval by Donald Tusk — the president’s political rival — of at least one candidate is necessary for the board to continue operating beyond early November. If their number drops below the six members required by law, the central bank could risk losing its ability to respond in crisis situations.

The stalemate over the appointments, which require the endorsement of both the president and premier, coincides with a conflict involving Governor Adam Glapinski. The ruling coalition is seeking to put him on trial, which could lead to his being suspended, alleging political meddling. Glapinski has denied any wrongdoing.

“Both the central bank’s management board and the governor may simultaneously lose their constitutional independence,” Pawel Szefernaker, the president’s chief of staff, told a news conference on Friday.

Szefernaker said the president will send the names of four candidates for the central bank management board for the prime minister’s sign-off. The list includes former central bank deputy governor, Marta Kightley, and three current Monetary Policy Council members: Ludwik Kotecki, Marcin Zarzecki and Przemyslaw Litwiniuk.

It’s the same lineup that Tusk rejected earlier this year, although pressure is building to resolve the conflict before the term of the last board member required to maintain the quorum, Adam Lipinski, expires on Nov. 4. A government spokesman, Adam Szlapka, didn’t respond to a request for comment.
