Another vicious attack raises again the question of why so many politicians resist the idea of schools having at least some employees armed and ready to defend children. This week a shooter at Silver Rail Elementary in Bend, Ore., killed four and wounded two others. Fortunately, the killer and his deadly rampage were stopped—several minutes before police arrived—by an armed father who happened to be nearby.

Liz Kreutz, Minyvonne Burke and Leah Nagy report for NBC: Kaylub Giamanco was driving home from lunch when he heard gunshots and saw a gunman entering the Oregon elementary school his two young daughters attend. The 36-year-old carpenter ran into the school and killed the teenage suspect.

Not for the first time, the world has benefited greatly from a bearded, 30-something carpenter who was willing to confront evil. But why should students and teachers have to rely on good fortune and courageous passersby for security?

At CBS News Kerry Breen has more on the indispensable dad: A statement released by Giamanco’s family on Friday said, “He is not seeking recognition, but instead wishes to express his gratitude to the first responders, school personnel, and community for the outpouring of love and support.”“The tragedy at Silver Rail Elementary has devastated the Bend community,” they wrote.

Giamanco and his family asked for privacy and said they will not be giving interviews.

President Trump on Friday called the bystander a “great hero” who “took care of business.”“Thank God we had him; otherwise, it would have been much worse,” Mr. Trump said, adding: “It’s a terrible thing, but thank goodness for a man that had a gun and knew how to use it.”The CBS report also makes clear that locked doors are not enough to defend innocent lives: Bend Police Chief Mike Krantz told reporters Thursday that the shooter entered the school by “shooting at locked doors.”He was then pursued by the bystander, who shot and killed him, Krantz said.

When police arrived minutes later, Krantz says they found the deceased shooter and four victims — three children, ages 5, 8 and 11, and a teacher — inside the school. Two other victims, a student and a teacher, were hospitalized with critical injuries. NBC reporters note: Kyle Giamanco said his brother is a hero, but said Kaylub Giamanco does not want to speak out right now because he feels guilty that he could not save more children.

Dylan Costa, who has been friends with the brothers since childhood, said he was not surprised that Kaylub jumped into action. He said that about four months ago, Kaylub saved another brother’s life after a motorcycle accident almost severed the brother’s leg…“Kaylub has always been a hero from the time we were six years old. He’s always been the type to spring into action when needed,” he said…“I believe God put the right man in the right spot at the right time. I don’t know anyone else that would have sprung into action like he did to save so many lives from a massacre,” he said.

Thank God for Kaylub Giamanco. Countless lives were saved only because they were lucky enough to be protected by someone who was in the right place at the right time, with the necessary ability and guts to take down the shooter—and with the wisdom to act. School district officials had not been as wise in formulating their policies. The website of the Bend-La Pine school district says: No person on grounds of the schools controlled by the Board of Directors for Bend-La Pine Schools (including in school buildings) shall bring to, possess, conceal or use a weapon or firearm at any property under the jurisdiction of Bend-La Pine Schools, any activities under the jurisdiction of the district, or any interscholastic activities administered by a voluntary organization (i.e., Oregon School Activities Association). This prohibition includes those who may otherwise be permitted by law to carry such weapons or firearms.

The school district passed a ban after Oregon Senate Bill 554 was passed by lawmakers in 2021, giving every public school district the option to ban guns from their premises.

Let’s hope that everyone will now appreciate the wisdom of having at least one responsible employee on school grounds who is ready, willing and able to defend innocent lives.
