Indonesian banks and telecommunication stocks may face further losses, as the nation’s best-run companies struggle to stay immune from any broad selloff on the risk of a downgrade by MSCI Inc., according to Allspring Global Investments.
The two sectors account for around 80% of the MSCI Indonesia Index, which has plunged over 40% since January when the index compiler first warned of downgrading the Southeast Asian market. Shares of PT Telkom Indonesia Persero have nearly halved in this period, while major lenders including PT Bank Central Asia and PT Bank Rakyat Indonesia Persero have each lost at least 23%.
“The irony in this MSCI-led selloff is that Indonesia’s banks and telecom companies are among the country’s strongest companies in terms of operating track record and disclosure, and are consensus holdings,” said Gary Tan, a portfolio manager at Allspring. “Yet they could face disproportionate selling pressure as active managers reduce risk ahead of MSCI’s June market classification review,” said Tan, who is a member of a team that manages the firm’s Emerging Markets Equity Fund.
Indonesia suffered its worst stock rout in nearly three decades on Friday after MSCI warned the country’s emerging-market status was in jeopardy, raising the prospect of withdrawal from global indexes. While authorities have taken steps to ease the risk, including a pledge to remove closely held companies from the benchmark gauge, uncertainties before MSCI’s final decision in June mean actively managed funds may still choose to cut exposure to index heavyweights.
The fund Tan co-manages had 2.27% of its assets invested in Indonesian stocks as of September, versus the benchmark weighting of 0.43%.
Tan said he is watching Indonesian authorities’ response to MSCI but sees little clarity on how the situation will unfold.
“Our sense is still too early to call a bottom given how fluid the situation remains and the potential for further policy intervention in the near term,” he said.
