The IG Metall workers union building, near the Volkswagen AG (VW) headquarters and auto plant complex, in Wolfsburg.

AG is heading toward a fresh showdown with its German workforce after the IG Metall union threatened walkouts from January if the carmaker backs away from plans to reopen key labor agreements.

The union said Volkswagen gave notice to terminate 10 of its 13 collective agreements at the end of the year. The move would put issues including pay, working hours, bonuses and staffing rules back on the table for negotiation.

IG Metall has given Volkswagen until the end of the month to reverse the move. If the company refuses, the union said it will prepare strikes and other forms of industrial action once a mandatory period of labor peace expires on Dec. 31. A Volkswagen spokesman wouldn’t immediately comment, but said it plans to issue a statement later Friday.

The clash lands in the middle of Chief Executive Officer Oliver Blume’s attempt to reshape Volkswagen, cutting jobs, factory costs and bureaucracy in Germany while freeing up cash for electric cars, software and automated-driving technology.

The overhaul reflects a wider crisis across Europe’s auto industry, where manufacturers are grappling with expensive domestic operations, weak demand and Chinese rivals that develop new vehicles and technology faster and at lower cost.

The dispute risks reopening wounds from a bruising restructuring battle in 2024, when Volkswagen and labor leaders agreed on measures that IG Metall says are already saving about €1.5 billion ($1.7 billion) a year in labor costs.

That pact protects workers against compulsory layoffs through 2030 and included commitments on future production at plants like Emden, Hanover and Zwickau. More recent restructuring talks stopped short of deciding the long-term fate of several German factories.

The union wants formal negotiations to begin on Nov. 24, ahead of a Dec. 3 deadline, and says talks should start at factories that have an uncertain longer-term outlook.

“We are not seeking this conflict,” IG Metall negotiator Thorsten Gröger said. But if Volkswagen sticks with the cancellations, the union will prepare for “all escalation levels” of industrial action from the start of next year.
