President Emmanuel Macron pledged to prevent more rioting and looting by maintaining a heightened security presence and tasking his government to respond to some of the protesters’ demands.
“It’s not normal that six months before a presidential election, our country should be in such a state of turmoil,” he said Monday after visiting police in Marseille. “Some people are happy to see disorder, I’m not — never again another Oct. 17.”France was plunged into chaos on Oct. 17 as cost-of-living protests escalated into looting of some 3,000 stores across the country and nearly as many arrests. The government averted the same degree of violence around renewed protests on Saturday by deploying many more police and only approving marches organized by labor unions.
But protests are set to continue, with student groups demanding concrete measures to address concerns about school conditions and the system for distributing university slots. Unions have also called for a major day of strikes and protests on Nov. 5.
Macron said the government is working on a response to “legitimate aspirations” and will approve routes for protests that protect town centers.
“We will continue to hold firm both on Saturday, on Nov. 5, and on the Saturdays that follow,” Macron said. “If together we do our job properly, this movement will calm down because we will have addressed legitimate demands and because order will be maintained.”
