AirTrunk secured a A$4.25 billion ($3 billion) green loan to finance the development of a Sydney data center campus, a signal of confidence in a sector that’s taken a slew of hits in recent weeks.

The project will add infrastructure for cloud, artificial intelligence and other digital services used by Australian businesses, governments and communities, according to a statement from AirTrunk on Tuesday. It is expected to support more than 10,000 jobs across construction, trades, engineering, logistics and safety, the company said.

Blackstone Inc.-backed AirTrunk is developing the hyperscale data center, known as SYD3, in Sydney’s west. A consortium of 32 local and international financial institutions backed the loan, AirTrunk said. The financing underscores the massive sums still flowing into Australia’s data-center buildout even as concerns mount over stretched power grids and community opposition.

Nextdc Ltd. warned this month that delayed power supply at one of its major projects in Melbourne would hit profit, while Firmus Grid Ltd. pulled its initial public offering after investors balked at its targeted A$30 billion valuation.

“SYD3 is a long-term investment in Western Sydney and Australia’s digital capability, backed by the confidence of leading Australian and international banks,” said Tom Mackellar, the data center operator’s vice president for origination and market expansion. The green financing “reflects our view that sustainability should be built into how digital infrastructure is funded and delivered.”
