About 3.6 million people across Uganda are facing acute food insecurity, according to the 2026 Integrated Food Security Phase Classification report on acute food insecurity and malnutrition. The assessment, compiled by Ugandan authorities alongside international food-security partners, found that large pockets of the population already lack reliable access to adequate food.
The report projects the number of people in crisis could climb to 4.4 million between February and June 2027 if current conditions persist, driven by a mix of erratic rainfall, localized conflict and rising living costs in several regions. Rural households that depend on subsistence farming are described as particularly exposed, with many already reducing meal sizes or skipping meals entirely.
Officials said the findings would guide where humanitarian agencies and the government direct limited relief resources over the coming months. Aid groups have previously warned that Uganda's food security outlook could deteriorate further without additional funding, as the country also absorbs refugees and manages overlapping health emergencies, including recent Ebola cases.
