AG swung to a loss after absorbing another round of writedowns as the carmaker struggles with a rapidly worsening operating environment, particularly in China.

Europe’s biggest carmaker reported an operating loss of €5.86 billion ($6.3 billion) during the third quarter, VW said Thursday, slightly worse than analyst expectations. Like its German carmaking peers BMW AG and Mercedes-Benz Group AG, the manufacturer is struggling to adapt to shrinking demand in China.

After decades of strong profits from China, the speed of the decline there is depriving VW of funds to invest in future products and technology. The company is targeting returns of between 8% and 10% by 2030, compared with a warning last month it’d make next to no profit this year.

Stripping out roughly €10 billion of writedowns and restructuring charges announced last month, the underlying result was too weak, Chief Financial Officer Arno Antlitz said in a statement.

Volkswagen needs to move “quickly and decisively” on its overhaul, accelerating cuts to model complexity, vehicle costs, overhead and factory spending to restore enough profitability to fund future technology and products. That task has grown more urgent as sales in China fell 40% in the third quarter.

This week, Mercedes said it’ll recast its business in China, after Volvo Car AB Chief Executive Officer Hakan Samuelsson said the opportunity to sell western-developed cars in China was “gone.”Over the weekend, VW’s premium Audi brand outlined plans to build its first factory in the US, after sales there slumped partly because of steep tariffs. While BMW and Mercedes operate factories in the world’s second-biggest market, Audi has so far relied on production in Mexico.
