Growing voter disillusionment with AI is driving a regulatory push in the US ahead of midterm elections, though the White House has so far shown little interest. Polling shared first with Semafor found voters preferred “reasonable” safeguards, even if such rules hurt US competitiveness. The Trump administration has so far pursued a laissez-faire approach to AI, despite warnings from some industry leaders that the technology poses an existential risk to humanity.

A regulatory push is nevertheless gathering pace in response to voter frustration: Though support for AI data center construction has recovered somewhat among Republicans, the public writ large remains highly opposed, a recent Heatmap poll found. “The backlash is far-reaching,” a former tech executive told The Wall Street Journal.
