Prime Minister Peter Magyar said appointing his nationalist predecessor, Viktor Orban, as United Nations Secretary General would spell the end of the organization.

Magyar was responding to a recent editorial in the Wall Street Journal that said the US administration has advocated Hungary’s long-time leader for the role with Russia and China believed to support him. The report cited unnamed sources from the three countries, who are permanent members of the UN Security Council.

“You can say many bad things about the UN, but I don’t think anybody wants to abolish it,” Magyar said at a news conference in Prague on Thursday. “If you want to destroy the UN, then take Orban. That’s the only reason for choosing him.”Popular anger over graft and a stagnant economy catapulted Magyar to a landslide victory in April’s general elections, which ended Orban’s 16 years in power. Several ministers and a former central bank governor have been detained as part of a crackdown on alleged corruption of the previous ruling elite.

Magyar said he doesn’t think a person “who robbed their homeland and made Hungary one of Europe’s poorest and most corrupt countries, should lead the UN.”Orban has denied any allegations of impropriety during his time in office.

The process for nominating a successor to Antonio Guterres is stalled, with none of the nine declared candidates believed to have the support of all five veto-wielding permanent members of the security council.
