The views of French economist Gabriel Zucman are unconvincing, especially as they are offered without apparent irony amid the unrest in France (“California’s Wealth Tax and the French Economist,” Review & Outlook, Oct. 26). Tensions behind the latest breakdown of civic order are more complicated than economic policy or the “affordability framing” now trending in the U.S. What is far less complicated is France’s fiscal problem.

Government spending reached 57.3% of GDP in 2025, public debt stood at 115.7%, the deficit was 5.1% and real GDP growth was only 0.8%—well below the EU’s 1.5% growth rate.
