Hours before millions of Americans head to the polls in an election which could see Republicans lose control of Congress and the Senate, the US president rambled for nearly an hour about the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool, strikes on Venezuela and Democrats whom he called “communist jihadists”.

Giving a speech in front of the newly renovated 618m-long pool, he claimed it was “the biggest anywhere in the world by far” and the $16m (£12m) makeover should be a project that “unites all Americans”.

There are bigger pools by length and volume across Europe and Asia, and 49 per cent of Americans disapproved of Mr Trump’s renovation, according to a YouGov poll by The Economist in August.

“The vandalism was unprecedented,” Mr Trump said, referring to unproven accusations that vandals had damaged the pool. Both the contractor he used and the US attorney’s office in Washington have said the issues resulted from poor workmanship.

He also criticised efforts by former presidents Barack Obama and Joe Biden to fix the pool and mentioned how long it had been closed to the public during each of their terms.

The Washington Memorial could be seen reflected in the pool behind Mr Trump during his address Mr Trump then invited an aide named Greg to come up on stage and display pictures of pipes and joints used in the pool’s infrastructure, while Mr Trump described how they had been replaced.

Sarah Smith, the BBC North America editor, called it “a very bizarre last pitch to voters before the crucial midterm elections”.

Mark Stone, a Sky News US correspondent, added: “He said quite a few things which are demonstrably untrue in an appearance which will surely go down as one of the most bizarre midterm-eve presidential appearances ever. Totally out of step with what voters want and care about.”The Republicans are facing a landslide defeat in the midterms on Tuesday, with Democrats predicted to run neck-and-neck with candidates hand-picked by Mr Trump in states including Texas and South Carolina.

Final New York Times polls show Democrats have the edge in six of seven battleground states, including a lead in Kansas.

But Mr Trump, whose ratings are at record lows, did not mention the elections that will determine the last two years of his presidency until later, as he continued talking about the pool in his long and repetitive speech.

A small press pack surrounded the president as he gave a rambling speech by the newly renovated pool The president called the vote “the most important midterm, I believe, in our lifetime” and described Democratic candidates as “the most extreme and dangerous slate of candidates in American history”.

“The Democrats want to blow all of this up by electing communist jihadists,” he said. “There’s never been anything like what we’re seeing – jihadists and Muslim Brotherhood members and people that nobody can even believe what we’re looking at.”

“Usually whoever the sitting president is – Republican or Democrat, good or bad, good president, great president, bad – for some reason, the sitting president doesn’t win the midterms,” Mr Trump concluded. “But we gave this a very strong shot.”As the speech wrapped up, he stood silently holding a poster of the algae-clogged pool as triumphant music played.

Mr Trump held up a photo of the algae-covered pool before the renovation that would ‘unite all Americans’ Later on Fox News, Mr Trump boasted to Sean Hannity of creating $25tn worth of wealth, the lowest drug prices in the world and said the US was “respected again all over the world. We were laughed at two years ago”. He then spoke about the Iran war while Mr Hannity tried to interject.

“When I’m on the ballot... we get 50 per cent more votes... I’m asking everybody to pretend I’m on the ballot,” he repeated as he listed his tax cuts for tips, overtime and social security for seniors. “If our people vote, we win in a landslide,” he added.

Mr Trump’s speeches have become increasingly loose in the run-up to the elections. He has dished out crude insults to journalists, made inappropriate comments about male candidates’ bodies and delivered lengthy addresses that are often tangential and riddled with inaccuracies.

A New York Times analysis of his speeches found they were more profane and absolutist than when he ran for president a decade ago and that his public communication was more vulgar, uninhibited and incoherent than in 2016.

The analysis found Mr Trump used nearly 15 swear words per 10,000 words compared with 14 two years ago and six a decade ago.
