The US state of Maine is nearing a record midterm election turnout, according to Secretary of State Shenna Bellows, Fox News reported Tuesday.

Bellows told Fox News that the state has competitive races across the ticket, arguing that Maine maintains the "gold standard" of using only paper ballots.

The state last broke a midterm turnout record in 2022, when 62% of eligible voters cast ballots, according to Bellows.

"I think we might see 65% or even 70% given that over a third of registered voters have already cast their ballot in that early voting period, which is really truly remarkable," she said.

Maine is one of a few states that allow ranked-choice voting, a process that often delays results.

"I think it’s highly possible that the US Senate race will go to ranked-choice voting," she said.

Towns count all ballots on election night and must post results at voting places, she said, adding that most will share them with the media.

Her office asked towns to send results Tuesday night, though they legally have two business days to do it.
