The Trump administration has dispatched an unprecedented 1,000 monitors and observers to all 50 states to ensure compliance with federal voting laws during Tuesday’s midterms.

The US president has frequently claimed, without producing evidence, that the midterms are under threat from widespread voter fraud.

On Tuesday, Maggie Toulouse Oliver, the New Mexico secretary of state, said department of justice (DOJ) monitors had been “questioning voters” in Bernalillo County, New Mexico PBS reported.

Harmeet Dhillon, a US assistant attorney general, said she was “very proud we are deploying the largest monitoring effort in DOJ history, and pursuing transparency for elections in an assertive and non-discriminatory manner”. Voters line up ready to cast their ballots at the Hammer Museum polling station in Los Angeles CHRIS TORRES/EPA/Shutterstock Democrats are nervous that the federal election monitors are part of an effort to either interfere with or undermine the election. Latino voters are expected to form a significant part of any blue wave, with many having grown disillusioned with Mr Trump after trusting him with their vote in 2024. Some have cited heavy-handed immigration raids as turning them off the US president.

Mr Trump previously refused to rule out sending Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents to polling stations, but the DOJ later clarified they will not serve as election monitors. The threat of an ICE presence alone was enough to send jitters through Hispanic communities.

The Telegraph spoke to a voter at one polling station in a Latino community in Austin, Texas, after he raised a complaint about a poll watcher giving him an “intimidating look” as he went to cast his ballot.

Rudy Martinez, 66, said a woman “made a look” as he went to vote for James Talarico, the Democrats’ candidate for Texas senator, in Austin’s East Cesar Chavez neighbourhood.

“She was sitting right as you walked in,” the retail worker said. “She was the only person I saw that made a look like that. You know the way I took it? I took it as ‘That’s a Mexican coming in here.’”

Intimidation denial The Telegraph later spoke to the poll watcher, who denied intimidating anyone and said she was there to make sure voting went smoothly. She identified herself as a local volunteer, not a federal monitor.

The woman, who asked not to be named, said voters’ anxieties were unsurprising given that “public officials, including the president, made statements with the purpose of trying to undermine folks’ confidence in the election”.

Other reports suggested a DOJ monitor entered the parking lot of the Living Waters Church polling site in Dallas. They reportedly identified themselves as a federal monitor to an election clerk on site, but they did not produce sufficient identification, so they were asked to leave.

In New York, ballot-machine glitches in a key swing district also hampered voters. Up to 250,000 voters in Westchester County were thought to be affected by the voting machine problem.

The glitch has triggered unfounded allegations of electoral fraud from Right-wing influencers, but local officials have insisted that all votes will be counted.

Vote-counting machines also malfunctioned at sites in Michigan, where another crucial Senate race was taking place on Tuesday. It delayed some voting at polling stations in and around Detroit.

Ms Bush claimed DOJ employees requested copies of training materials from election monitors in Dearborn, and asked election monitors in Flint questions about their training.

In North Carolina, a technical issue delayed results by 45 minutes and forced the state’s election board to extend voting times in some counties.
